2.7 million Canadian fire extinguishers recalled, here's why

Thursday, November 2, 2017, 1:32 PM - Canada has experienced a record-breaking wildfire season this year, and now it seems even having a fire extinguisher handy may not be enough for residents living in wildfire-prone areas.
Nearly 40 million fire extinguishers in the U.S. and Canada have been recalled, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The recall involves 134 models, both plastic handle and push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers, manufactured by U.S. company Kidde Corporation between Jan. 1, 1973, and Aug. 15, 2017. This includes models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015.

Officials say the units can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. The nozzle can also detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard, the commission reports.
A list of all of the affected model numbers can be found here. Consumers are asked to contact Kidde immediately to request a free replacement fire extinguisher and instructions on returning the recalled unit.
There have been 391 reports of the extinguishers failing, resulting in at least one death in 2014 that involved a car fire following a crash, as well as 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns.
The CPSC is working in conjunction with Health Canada to notify customers of the recall. No proof of purchase is required, however, a model number, year of manufacture, and the unit's date code and serial number must be provided.
According to Health Canada, there have been two reports of failed activation. While one incident included property damage, in both cases no injuries were reported.
