Fireball lights up the skies in Europe

Daniel Martins
Digital Reporter

Monday, March 16, 2015, 9:23 AM - It looks like a large fireball blazed across the skies in Europe Sunday night.

News sites were featuring dashcam footage of the fireball, which flares green over its seconds-long passage through the sky.

It seems to have been best seen in southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria, like the video above, from a YouTube user who spotted it in Tirol, Austria.

As for the timing, at least one observatory spotted it in a meteorcam at around 19:44 UTC (3:44 p.m. Eastern Time):

Those are all the details that are available at the moment.

A meteor is an object that enters the earth's atmosphere and burns up on re-entry, making for a brilliant flash. If it survives to reach the earth's surface intact, it is technically called a meteorite.
