Major B.C flooding: cities threatened by rising waters

Thursday, May 10, 2018, 7:20 PM - The B.C. flood season is like a marathon, and we've just passed the first mile marker. The majority of the snowpack is still locked up in the highest elevations, but we're getting some trouble spots developing with rapid snowmelt at lower elevations. 

FLOODING HIGHLIGHTS

• Serious flooding in Kootenay-Boundary region, with thousands under evacuation orders
• Lake Oganagan is increasing at nearly 10 cm daily, now just 1.26 m lower than 2017
• Major warm-up forecast next week for all of B.C. – dire flow rate forecast for some rivers by early next week

Bad news for flooding, another ridge of high pressure is set to migrate over the region. Watch the video below to catch you up to speed on the timing of the ridge:

The graph above shows the snowpack depleting at a rapid rate, and it wouldn't be surprising to see most of this turn into meltwater over the next week. 

But, what about higher elevations?

FORECAST CENTRE UPDATE: RECORD TEMPERATURES?

• Most of the shower activity diminishes early on Thursday, then we await a major high pressure ridge to dominate the pattern
• Some municipalities will likely challenge the 30°C mark Sunday-Tuesday
• A slight cooling trend by late next week, but still seasonably warm
