Monday, September 15, 2014, 5:46 PM - Here's proof that love comes in all shapes and sizes: An Australian couple has paid hundreds of dollars for brain surgery for their 10 year-old goldfish, George.

According to Dr. Tristan Rich, who executed the surgery, a large tumor on George's head was preventing him from eating properly. To make matters worse, he was "getting bullied by the other fish."

Dr. Rich said the hour-long procedure was "quite intricate", requiring different buckets filled with varying doses of anesthetics.

During the surgery, a tube was inserted into George's mouth to keep him hydrated.

"Controlling the blood loss is really important in such a small patient... And then closing up did prove quite difficult because there wasn't much skin to deal with," he told CNN.

George's human family is pleased with the outcome.

"Yeah it's a goldfish, [but] a goldfish is a pet, a family pet, just as important really. They bring a lot of pleasure ... they're beautiful to sit and watch," said owner Joyce Pip.

George is now recovering at home in his pond with his 20 fish friends.

Thanks to the surgery, doctors say the ten year-old fish could live for another twenty years.
