Auroras seemed pretty common over the past few months, a real treat for photographers with good gear, a bit of expertise, and ready access to dark skies.
Swedish photographer Goran Strand had all three of those ingredients, and he put them to good use from his town in northern Sweden.
His latest effort, below, looks like a scene out of Stargate:
When shot in a 360o panorama, it looks like the viewer is on a path through an aurora-ringed portal to a faraway galaxy.
"You can see the Milky Way rise from the East and the aurora to the North," Strand writes on his blog. "Outside of the all sky circle are reflections in the waters of lake Storsjön near Östersund, Sweden."
Strand is an accomplished sky photographer, and he occasionally turns his hand to timelapses. Here's his take on the rare phenomenon of noctilucent clouds:
The shot was featured on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day. We've featured Strand's work here before, with a great shot of both an aurora and the Milky Way.
