Hail storm smashes nose of plane, forces emergency landing

Sunday, August 9, 2015, 3:23 PM - Passengers of Delta Flight 1889 were in for a scare on Friday as their plane had to make an emergency landing due to intense hail.

Hail battered the plane as it flew through a thunderstorm. Photos of the aircraft's smashed windshield and damaged nose were posted to social media by the passengers.

One person was taken to hospital after the plane landed, according to Denver International Airport officials. The cause was not known, however, Airport spokeswoman Laura Coale told CNN there was "severe turbulence."

The plane suffered damage to the radome -- the nose cone area that houses weather radar and navigational equipment. There was no say on whether or not the equipment was damaged.

Passenger Rob Wessman recalls seeing the plane's damage after landing.

"We went around the corner from the window, we could see the shattered windshield," Wessman told KSTU. "We could see the nose of the plane was missing. It was really intense."

Flight 1889 passengers were put on other flights to continue on to their destinations.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
