Hammy the deer is finally free

Friday, November 24, 2017, 6:33 PM - British Columbia's famed deer has finally been de-tangled from his hammock.
The deer -- nicknamed 'Hammy' -- made global headlines earlier this month when he was spotted in Prince Rupert with part of a purple hammock attached to his right antler.
Hammy had gotten stuck in a backyard hammock in August and was cut free, but a chunk of fabric remained stuck to him.
Hammy managed to evade wildlife officials until this week, when conservation officers tranquilized him and removed what was left of the hammock.
Officials say he's doing great.
Hammy's antler is still purple. It's been dyed, which is standard practice for animals that have been tranquilized.
Usually, though, the animals are fitted with a yellow tag. Officials decided to paint Hammy's antler purple so people could easily recognize him.
“We kind of thought in this instance, (painting an antler purple) would allow us to keep track of Hammy and let the people still have a connection to that animal,” Zane Testawich of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service told the Toronto Star.
