Storm erosion unearths human remains in New York

Friday, April 27, 2018, 11:29 AM - After years of powerful storms, a giant burial ground near the Bronx borough of New York City is eroding and unearthing human bones along the shoreline.
Earlier this month, authorities removed 174 exposed bones from the Hart Island Cemetery. More than a million unclaimed citizens with no family or money are buried at the site.

Melinda Hart, who is working with the Hart Island Project to preserve the site, told news affiliate WCBS erosion is causing skeletons to fall off the hill and onto the beach, where they are washed away by the tide.
Authorities are working to identify the recovered skeletons they have recovered and plan to re-bury them at a safer site.

Hunt says she's been monitoring the problem since the 1990s. The site is currently overseen by the city's corrections department.
Earlier this month, authorities with the government agency announced they are fast-tracking their plans to reconstruct the shoreline to stabilize the graves.
