Major rainmaker moves on from Prairies

Sunday, September 4, 2016, 9:19 PM - After torrential downpours, people in Manitoba may have a chance to dry out soon.

The south of the province has experienced a couple of days of heavy rain, such that some areas in the province's southeast received more up to 80 mm of rain.

The community of Altona was in the 70-80 mm range, while Gretna picked up 75 mm and St. Malo received 63 mm.

Though the rain is tapering in Manitoba, the slow-moving system that delivered it still packs a punch, and is now deluging parts of northwestern Ontario, where rainfall warnings were in effect Monday morning for Kenora and Red Lake before being dropped. Environment Canada says the heaviest rains are now expected in far northern parts of the province.

"A developing low pressure system over Northwestern Ontario will continue to track along this front into tonight," the agency says in a statement. "It will bring a more general rain, falling heavily at times. Total rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 mm are likely in most areas with some localized higher amounts of 50 mm possible by the time the rain tapers off tonight. "

In the meantime, rising humidity is raising the possibility of thunderstorms later Monday, though most are not expected to reach severe levels.
