High winds toss bouncy castle and child onto highway

Monday, May 14, 2018, 3:03 PM - High winds in Adelanto, California tossed a bouncy castle with a child inside onto a highway Saturday, local media reports.

The 9-year-old child sustained minor injuries.

The incident occurred just before 3:15 p.m. The inflatable house rolled onto the highway and struck a vehicle, the sheriff's department reports.

The child was taken to the hospital. The driver of the vehicle was "shook up from the ordeal," but not injured.

BOUNCY CASTLE INJURIES NOT UNCOMMON

A 2012 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that between 1990 to 2010 more than 64,657 U.S. children were taken to the emergency rooms for injuries associated with inflatable bouncer toys. Even more alarming: The rate more than doubled between 2008 and 2010, with an average of 31 children injured daily.

SAFETY TIPS

When installed properly, inflatable houses can be a safe plays for kids to play.

Individual models usually come with guidelines for wind speed limits.

Ian McInnis, who inspects inflatables for safety in Halifax, says a general rule is to add extra anchors, even when you think you have enough.

"Prioritize on natural tie offs," he says.

"Anything that has root. Trees, sides of buildings, anything you know is not going to blow away in those conditions."
