Thursday, September 25, 2014, 4:10 PM - Hundreds of 'alien eggs' -- aka algae balls -- have washed up on Dee Why Beach in New South Wales, Australia.

The strange spheres started turning up over the weekend. Witnesses say they're sticky and sponge-like in consistency.

The 'alien eggs' have attracted quite the crowd, with locals telling media they've never seen anything like it.

According to scientists, the UFOs (Unidentified Floating Objects) are actually a rare type seaweed that forms into an egg shape. Scientists aren't sure why the seaweed does this, but it could be to protect against predators.

In Japan, the living organism is referred to as "Marumo", and it can be brought to shore by warmer weather and rough waves.
