Hurricane Marie becomes Category-5 storm as it moves away from land, farther out into Pacific

Sunday, August 24, 2014, 7:10 PM - Hurricane Marie has grown in strength as it moves out into the Pacific, reaching Category 5 status and provoking dangerous waves along Mexico's western coast.

This is the third major hurricane of the 2014 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday that Marie had sustained winds of 260 km/h and was located 805 km/h south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. The storm was moving west at 22 km/h.

Hurricane-force winds extended up to 75 km away from the storm's centre, with tropical storm-force winds reaching out to 405 km. 

Swells provoked by the storm affected the southwestern coast of Mexico and the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula and could cause dangerous surf and rip current conditions, the centre said.
