Summer gives several the cold shoulder in farewell weekend

Dr. Doug Gillham
Meteorologist, PhD

Friday, September 1, 2017, 11:18 AM - The Labour Day weather pattern will to some extent mimic the dominate summer pattern – very warm and dry in the west and changeable temperatures east of the Rockies.

GET SCROLLING: Data visualizations for southern and eastern Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada, Prairies and B.C. Plus, remember to come back on September 13, 2017, for the Fall Forecast all-day event and a quick look at what winter may bring.

We will start the long weekend on Friday afternoon with mid-summer heat west of the Great Lakes, while it will feel like fall from the Great Lakes to Atlantic Canada. The map below shows temperatures relative to normal during Friday afternoon, with blue and green representing cooler than normal temperatures, while the various shades of orange and red highlighting warmer than normal temperatures.

LONG WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS

• Heat battles cooler, fall-like temperatures

However, by Labour Day eastern Canada will have recovered to near seasonal, with warmer than normal temperatures in some areas, while cooler temperatures will be spreading across the Prairies. British Columbia will be one exception to the pattern reversal as temperatures will warm to near record levels during the weekend and into next week.

Here are more details on the forecast across Canada for the weekend.

Southern and Eastern Ontario and Quebec

After a rather autumnal start to the weekend, temperatures will steadily warm through the weekend with mid-summer warmth making a brief appearance across southern Ontario on Monday. Temperatures will reach the upper 20s (a few spots will even approach 30oC). Saturday and Monday will be mostly rain-free, but a soaking rain is likely Saturday night and into Sunday as some moisture from the remnants of Harvey spreads into the region.

The rain will be heaviest across eastern Ontario and southern Quebec, with locally heavy rainfall possible on Sunday, especially across the Eastern Townships. Meanwhile, clearing will spread from west to east during the day on Sunday.

Monday will be breezy, with an increasing threat for showers towards and during Monday night as a cold front brings a return to autumnal weather for the middle and end of next week.

Atlantic Canada

The threat for showers will linger into Saturday across Newfoundland and Cape Breton, but much of the day will be rain-free. Abundant sunshine is expected for the Maritimes on Saturday and across Atlantic Canada on Sunday. However, clouds will spread into the Maritimes late on Sunday, with a period of rain spreading across the region for Sunday night and early Monday. The heaviest rain is expected across northern New Brunswick. A period of showers will track across Newfoundland on Monday, reaching the Avalon late in the day. A brisk southwest wind will help temperatures rise to above seasonal levels, with the warmer pattern continuing for most of next week.

HOUR-BY-HOUR: Rain forecast & timing for the weekend

Prairies and Northern Ontario

Friday will bring showers and thunderstorms to Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, but otherwise fair weather will dominate the weekend across most of the region.

However, there is the threat for passing showers along and north of the Yellowhead Highway Saturday night and into Sunday and scattered showers are expected on Monday across southern Manitoba as a cold front tracks across the region. Temperatures will trend cooler through the weekend with the coolest temperatures coming on Labour Day, but mid-summer heat will return next week.

British Columbia

Southern B.C. will continue to be hot and dry through the long weekend. A period of rain is expected on Saturday across parts of central and northern B.C., but dry weather will return to the entire province on Sunday and Monday. The heat will also build through the weekend with numerous high temperature records expected well into next week.

B.C.: POWERFUL HEAT AHEAD
