Intensifying lake effect snow in Ontario could bring 10+ cm

Thursday, January 21, 2016, 7:29 AM - Intensifying lake effect snow close to the Lake Superior shoreline prompted snow squall warnings early Thursday morning.

Up to 20 cm of snow is possible in the hardest hit areas through the day.

"Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow," Environment Canada warns. "Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations."

Shots of heavy snow are also expected for areas near Lake Huron with an additional 5-10 cm possible.

"Although conditions may be quite poor at times, they are not expected to stay that way for an extended period," EC says.

Seasonal conditions with sunny breaks are expected across much of southern Ontario Thursday.

There's a chance for squalls to develop along the southwestern shores of Lake Ontario Friday into Saturday.

"The winds don’t seem to be organized enough to produce anything significant," says Weather Network meteorologist Erin Wenckstern.

Wondering about the big U.S. storm?

Much of the central and eastern United States are set to be slammed later this week with a potentially powerful system. Our expert Brad Rousseau breaks down the impact here, including its potential effect on Canada, and The Weather Network is keeping a close eye on it as it evolves.

Latest models are keeping the northeast low south of Ontario and Quebec.

Monday's snowstorm recap

Intense snow squall bands brought a dumping of snow to parts of southern Ontario Monday.

"We have reports that indicated near 60+cm for the Teeswater area, 15 cm for Kitchener, 30+ cm in Port Elgin, 5-8 cm from Milton to Burlington," Sonnenburg says.
