Lightning kills dozens of sheep in Kentucky

Monday, April 16, 2018, 5:40 PM - A Kentucky farmer in Logan County woke up to a horrible scene Saturday morning.

Lightning had struck a tree on his property, killing 31 of his sheep.

The storm that hit the area was part of a system of slow-moving storms that spurred near-record snowfall and chilly temperatures in the U.S. Midwest, and tornadoes further east.

Crist Byler, a retired truck driver who has been herding sheep since 2015, told CNN 15 of his ewes and 16 lamb were killed.

While the odds of being struck by lightning are rare -- about one in a million -- Byler says he's worried about the welfare of his sheep.

Byler plans to replace the lost sheep.

"You just have to continue on," he says.

"[It's] just a part of farming."
