Sunday, September 18, 2016, 8:17 PM - Dangerous flooding could be on the way for Japan this week as Typhoon Malakas tracks northeastward.

QUICK FACTS:

  • Malakas briefly strengthened to a Category 3 Typhoon on Monday morning local time
  • The storm brought tropical-storm-force winds to northeast Taiwan
  • Peak sustained winds were 217.2 km/h
  • Malakas continues on a northeastward track, weakening
  • Mainland Japan is expected to be hit with heavy rain, flooding through Tuesday

Malakas tracked away from Taiwan early Sunday morning local time, but dozens of passenger flights were cancelled Saturday impacting nearly 10,000 travellers, Focus Taiwan News Channel reports reports.

Across four counties in Taiwan, more than 2,600 were evacuated as an emergency precautionary measure.

The storm began to strengthen Monday morning local time in the East China Sea after hitting Japan's Ryukyu Islands with the brunt of its force.

While Malakas may gradually weaken, it is expected to be a typhoon when it makes landfall in Japan.

Southern and Central Japan can expect to see rainfall amounts between 120-300 mm with wind gusts up to 160 km/h. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has already issued warnings for heavy rainfall and the potential for flooding with mudslides and landslides of concern for areas around higher terrain.
