Originally designated an F4 on the Fujita scale, it was later upgraded.
The increase on the scale was attributed to damage done across the town. Some well built homes, with solid foundations, were swept clean off the ground.
Elie was the first example of an F5 in Canada, making it the strongest ever recorded in the country.
It was also the 11th F5 to occur in North America since 1999.
