Get sunburn protection from this new wearable tech

Monday, June 22, 2015, 9:32 AM - After a long, harsh winter, manyof us are anxiously awaiting the arrival of summer and all of the wonderful things that it brings: warmer temperatures, outdoor activities and sunshine.

But the risks of spending too much time in the sun threaten to ruin the nicest summer day, leaving skin red, sore and scorched.

A consumer electronics company has developed a bracelet that allows the user to monitor their daily sun exposure.

Intended for daily use, the 'June' bracelet retails for $129 (U.S.).

It works in conjunction with an iPhone app to deliver personalized UV forecasts depending on your location and personal profile. 

The device uses sensors to measure both UVA and UVB rays and calculates a UV index in real time. 

The smart accessory will then send alerts if your skin is close to burning, based on the data collected.

Notifications are also sent as reminders to apply sunscreen and what level of SPF to use based on your skin type. It will even remind you when to throw on sunglasses and a hat.

It's the latest in a line of wearable digital technologies quickly growing in popularity worldwide.

Sunburns, no matter how mild or severe, cause permanent damage to the skin.

The dangers of sun exposure where highlighted recently by a woman who shared images of her skin cancer treatment wounds on social media.

Dermatologists recommend using at least an SPF 15 on a daily basis, regardless of the season or weather. On even the cloudiest of days, 90 per cent of UV rays shine through.
