Raccoon causes Ryerson pool closure

Raccoons have done it again. This past Wednesday, a furry friend climbed onto a sign at Ryerson University’s Recreation & Athletic Centre to take a nap, unaware that his antics would cause the building to temporarily shut down. The RU Recreation Twitter account snapped a picture of the raccoon and posted it to their page to explain the closure of the building, which houses Ryerson's Kerr Hall, theatre, and swimming pool.

At 9:04 a.m., approximately two and a half hours after they originally spotted him, the raccoon was safely removed from the premises.

Cute or a nuisance?

This isn’t the first time a raccoon has made things inconvenient. Last week, a raccoon crawled into the air ducts of an Air Canada flight in Saskatoon, delaying takeoff for seven hours. An animal control crew was unable to capture the furry fiend, but he eventually took off running across the tarmac to freedom.

Another raccoon decided to opt for public transit instead of air travel. In 2016, a raccoon delayed a Toronto subway for a few minutes when he hitched a ride inside a subway car. In a video shared on Twitter the raccoon seems to be quite friendly. Perhaps this wasn’t his first subway ride…

Although they can be quite a nuisance sometimes, people still love raccoons. In July 2015, a raccoon in Toronto was found dead at Yonge and Church street. Animal Services took over 10 hours to retrieve the raccoon, and Torontonians used the time to mourn this unfortunate loss. The raccoon was named “Conrad” and throughout the evening flowers and gifts were left for him.

Ah, raccoons. They never fail to make life interesting.
