Rainfall warnings for Prairie storm

Daniel Martins

Sunday, August 24, 2014, 10:08 AM - It's a rainy, rainy Sunday for much of southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the system that is drenching the region is so widespread, some communities won't begin to dry out until Monday.

Though the low-pressure system is south of the border, it is large enough to affect Canada as it slowly moves east.

Rainfall warnings covered much of both provinces Sunday morning, including the city of Winnipeg, and Saturday night was already rainy enough to cause localized flooding in some communities.

Many of the warnings had dropped by the mid-morning, but it's still going to be a soggy day.

In Saskatchewan, the rain will continue through Sunday. It'll taper off in the evening in most areas, according to Environment Canada, with totals in the 30-50 mm range, but localized downpours could push that to 75 mm.

In Manitoba, Environment Canada says rainfall should taper off over the course of the morning over the Red River Valley and Interlake areas, with up to 50 mm having fallen.

But in the Parklands, northern Interlake and Berens River areas, the rain won't stop until Monday, and they could be drenched with up to 75 mm by then.

Southern Manitoba is also at risk for severe thunderstorms from this system, with the biggest threats being torrential downpours and strong winds, and a slight chance of tornadoes mostly along the Manitoba-Ontario border.

"This will be a late afternoon, overnight event, with more elevated storms into Ontario overnight," Weather Network meteorologist Brad Rousseau. "There is only a narrow window of opportunity for tornadoes near the late evening around sunset."
