PHOTOS: Rare blue ice appears on Lake Michigan

Piles of blue ice, broken up into sizeable chunks due to a wind storm earlier this month, are creating a stunning scene.

Despite its striking appearance, the ice isn't actually blue. It only appears that way because compressed ice has pushed out the air bubbles, which scatter the light.
Without the presence of air bubbles, light passes through the ice without disruption, allowing it to better reflect the blue component of white light.
While rare, blue ice isn't uncommon. It can be seen in irregular intervals on the Great Lakes.
