Wednesday, June 15, 2016, 3:28 PM - An unstable air mass over the west continues to bring a widespread thunderstorm threat across the Prairies.

An upper low that pushed into northern Alberta has prompted a rainfall warning for the region.

"This system has brought heavy rain to the Grande Prairie and Peace River regions," said EC in the warning, updated late Wednesday morning. "Since last evening areas of the Peace River and Grande Prairie region have received 25 to 47 mm thus far."

Heavy rain is also expected in the High Level region with the highest amounts near the British Columbia border.

"Total amounts of 60 to 100 mm are expected with this system," EC adds. "Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts."

In addition to the heavy rain, strong winds with gusts up to 80 km/h are possible.

The weather warnings extend into northern British Columbia, as well, where heavy rainfall and high elevation snow are expected as the low pressure system strengthens today. Rainfall of up to 60 mm and snowfall up to 5 cm are expected.

The storm risk stretches into eastern Saskatchewan and southern/central Manitoba with the risk of isolated storms along the border. Heavy rain, strong winds and moderate hail are the greatest risks with these storms with a similar threat heading into Friday.
