Sunday, August 9, 2015, 7:08 PM - The northern lights have been putting on a fantastic light show over parts of Canada this weekend and it's not over yet.
The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, are created by solar flares on the sun's surface that create gusts of solar winds that pass through the Earth's atmosphere causing particles to emit the brilliant colours.
As with all auroras, they are visible wherever there are clear skies. NOAA's Aurora Forecast Model shows the lights can be seen until August 12.
That's not all you will see if you have access to clear and dark skies. The annual Perseid meteor shower is ramping up for an August 12 to 13 peak, as Earth swings through the debris trail left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle.
Photographers in central Alberta managed to capture stunning photos of the light show and The Milky Way in the wee hours of Sunday near the village of Donalda in central Alberta.
