Growing sinkhole devours several homes in Florida

Friday, July 14, 2017, 7:33 PM - A massive sinkhole in Florida has devoured two homes, and threatens several others.

The sinkhole opened up early Friday in the community of Land O'Lakes, north of Tampa. Aside from the two homes, ABC News reports a boat and swimming pool are also casualties, though no injuries have been reported.

Residents in the homes around the sinkhole have been evacuated, and ABC says power has been cut to around 100 homes. Boaters have also been asked to stay off a nearby lake as well.

At last report, the hole was more than 60 m across, and more than 15 m deep, filled with water and debris from the houses that had fallen into it.

From a depression reported in the nearly hours of Sunday, it has since grown a great deal within a day, and authorities say they can't predict when it will stabilize.

"We can't give a clear answer because this is Mother Nature," he said. "We don't know what direction the sinkhole's going to go. We don't know if it will make another sharp direction," Sheriff Chris Nocco told CNN.

The area will be fenced off, and officials say it may be more than a month before the situation returns to normal.
