Tuesday, August 18, 2015, 3:35 PM - A clever seal is making headlines after it outsmarted a group of hungry orca whales by finding safety on a nearby boat.

The harbour seal pulled off the sneaky escape on Friday.

According to the Huffington Post, orca researcher Josh McInnis was studying a pair of pods near B.C.'s Campbell River when the whales started to circle something.

They eventually swam away, and that's when McInnis spotted the fast-thinking seal perched on a boat.

According to McInnis, this sort of behaviour isn't uncommon for seals. It's typically seen during the summer, when pups are born.

Michelle Wigmore was sightseeing with her husband and witnessed the whole thing.

"It was just breathtaking and heartbreaking in a way because you don’t want to get in the middle of a hunt and affect wildlife and affect nature," Wigmore told Global News.

"But at the same time, you feel sort of sorry for the seal, but you know that this is how these transient orcas survive."
