State of emergency continues in 6 northern Ontario communities due to flooding

Emergency Management Ontario says damage assessments and repairs continue in the Sault Ste. Marie area following flooding caused by heavy rainfall earlier this week. 

Emergencies have been declared in six communities -- Batchewana First Nation, Johnson Township, Laird Township, Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional (Echo Bay) Township, Huron Shores, and Plummer Additional Township. 

EMO said Friday that flood waters are now receding and most roads in the area are passable and being repaired.

The Ministry of Transportation is assessing the damage and providing support to local authorities as repairs are conducted. 

Repairs have also begun to local and regional infrastructure damaged by flooding caused by the heavy rainfall on September 10 east of Sault Ste. Marie and on the north shore of Lake Huron. 

Up to 100 mm of rain came down in the span of just a few hours, triggering major flooding and road washouts that killed one person.
