More snow for Saskatchewan, dense fog in Manitoba

Sunday, January 22, 2017, 11:24 AM - After a week of record-breaking warmth across the Prairies, the weekend is shaping up to be a messy one across parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Snowfall warnings continue in central and northern Saskatchewan, with further accumulations of 5-10 cm expected Sunday morning.

"This low pressure system producing the snow will start to weaken today and the heavier snowfall will gradually taper off to light snow by this afternoon," says Environment Canada. "Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow."

Here's what the rest of the weekend brings.

Highlights

  • Snowfall warnings continue in central and northern Saskatchewan, with an additional 5 cm expected Sunday morning.
  • Fog advisories issued in southeastern Manitoba.
  • Light snow continues in southern Manitoba Sunday, with 2-4 cm in the forecast.

Meanwhile, southeastern Manitoba is under a weather advisory as visibility may be significantly reduced to near zero in areas with dense fog.

"High humidity and light winds are creating ideal conditions for fog formation over parts of southern Manitoba," says Environment Canada. "Slight westerly winds and a changeover to light snow will see the fog gradually lift from west to east through the day."

Temperatures are back to seasonal in Alberta, but will return to the freezing mark by Thursday, thanks to a ridge of high pressure which will drift in from British Columbia. Saskatchewan and Manitoba are forecast to remain above seasonal through the week.
