WATCH: “Frostbit” boy becomes global viral hit

Friday, January 16, 2015, 2:21 PM - Voxpops (or vox populi to give its full Latin name) are a staple element of creating news packages – asking members of the public their views on an issue. Often they can be benign and forgotten within seconds. Not this one.

When Northern Ireland’s UTV talked to the public about the recent snowy conditions gripping parts of country, they got more than they bargained for when speaking to a Derry/Londonderry teenager. 

The clip shows 18-year-old A’level student Ruairí McSorley talk about his journey to school and his comical segment – which includes the line "Oh, god, you wouldn't be long gettin' frostbit" in a strong Irish accent – soon went viral. 

Within minutes "#frosbit" was trending on Twitter. Clips of him on YouTube have racked up millions of views across the globe. 

UTV have an uncut version of the interview on their website where Ruairí talks about wearing new socks to prevent his ankles from getting “frostbit.”

But Ruairí isn’t just a run-of-the-mill voxpoper; he's a comic impressionist. Here’s a video of his impressions on YouTube:
