Not your average socks

Socks might not be top of mind when you're compiling a gift list, but these are special.

Osom Brand socks are made from yarns spun from 95 per cent clothing and textile waste.

The result is a high-quality sock in gorgeous, wearable colours.

Other eco perks:

  • No water or pesticides are used in the creation of the socks.
  • No dyes or chemicals are used in the production process.
  • Overall, the socks have a recycled content of 85 per cent, which helps to keep textile waste out of the landfill.

The zero waste gift basket

Everyone in The Weather Network's newsroom is buzzing about this gift basket, and it's not because of the beeswax.

It's because the kit is full of fabulous products that have a minimal impact on the environment.

In it, you'll find:

  • Beeswax Food Wrap from Abeego, Victoria, BC. Say goodbye to plastic wrap. You can wash and reuse this product for up to a year.
  • Laundry Soap Nuts from Eco Nuts Soap in California, USA. Made with no added fragrances or dyes, one package is good for up to 100 loads of laundry.
  • Bamboo Toothbrush from Greenence, Toronto ON. Antibacterial and made from a sustainable resource, these toothbrushes are functional and beautiful.
  • Reusable Chemical Free Dryer Sheet from Pure Eco Sheet, Guelph, ON. A dryer sheet that's unscented, hypoallergenic and lasts for hundreds of loads.
  • Rosemary Mint Bar Soap from Purple Urchin, Ottawa, ON. The smell is fantastic.

The kit is offered by Karma Food Co-op, an Ontario-based organization specializing in local, non-GMO and fair trade products.  If you have any questions about the kit, or want to make a particularly large order, send a note to store manager Talia at manager@karmacoop.org. The starter kit is being offered for the first time this year, and the Co-op is not set up to offer shipping, but Talia will do her best to help.

Celebrate your Canadian pride and organize your thoughts

The artwork on the covers of these hefty ecojot journals is spectacular. Designed by Toronto artist Carolyn Gavin, the journals pay homage to Canadian cities, complete with a whimsical map showing what makes them unique. If you'd prefer something a bit less patriotic, ecojot offers journals, planners and workbooks in other designs as well.

We like these products because:

  • These journals pack an impressive 300 pages, made from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled material, meaning no new trees were cut down to make them.
  • Everything is designed and produced in Canada.
  • Ecojot partners with organizations that help better the environment. Currently, they are collaborating with Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an elephant orphanage based in Kenya. If you purchase a product from ecojot's "Elephant Love for DSWT" line, 50 per cent of the profits will be donated to the orphanage.

A clock that doubles as a conversation piece

Now this is really neat.

Bedol water clocks run on water, not batteries or electricity. They convert ions in the water into energy, and the water only needs to be replaced every six months or so. The clocks are amazingly simple and fun to use, and they look great too.

They work remarkably well, too.

It's the kind of thing you have to see to believe.
