When will it rain? These Albertans have a 90 day philosophy

Thursday, March 10, 2016, 12:48 PM - A town that calls itself the Star Trek capital of Canada may also know a thing or two about weather.

Despite Alberta's unseasonably dry winter, the people of Vulcan, Alberta believe certain signs indicate precipitation is on the way. They follow the 90 day philosophy.

"If you're a believer in fog, which we've had lots of, 90 days from a fog you're supposed to get moisture, so we should get some great moisture in May, June and July," Vulcan Mayor Thomas Grant told The Weather Network.

Located about 130 km south of Calgary, agriculture is Vulcan's main industry. Needless to say, residents keep a close eye on the weather.

"A lot of the old timers, especially the older farmers around the community, they were always believers in the 90 day philosophy," said Grant.

"I think it's an old wive's tale to a degree but there's a lot of people who believe in it. They chart it and they watch for the fogs and go from there."
