White foam, skin burns amid rain at Tianjin blast site

Wednesday, August 19, 2015, 2:59 PM - Witnesses near the site of a series of explosions at the Port of Tianjin in northeastern China last week have reported a mysterious white foam that causes a burning sensation upon contact amid the first post-disaster rainfall.
On Tuesday, officials were urging the public to avoid the area amid fears the rain could spark a toxic reaction with some of the chemicals at the site.
One volunteer worker reported on social media that the rain turned her arms red and caused a stinging sensation.
Other journalists and workers at the site reported similar symptoms, which were relieved by rinsing with water.
South China Morning reports other people exposed to the rain experienced no symptoms.
Meanwhile, Tianjin's environmental authority says that pollution in the water and the air remains at safe levels.
On August 12, 2015 a series of explosions at a container storage station caused significant damage at the Port of Tianjin.
More than 100 people were killed and hundreds more were injured.
The official cause of the blast remains unknown, but investigations suggest the incident was an industrial accident.
