Saturday, December 6, 2014, 8:14 AM - Birder Steve Spitzer recently came across a peculiar sight in Lake Michigan: A great horned owl that appeared to be swimming.

The bird was apparently taken down by two peregrine faclons near Loyola Park Beach in Chicago. Spitzer and his colleagues scared the falcons away before capturing the footage.

The owl was able to evade danger by performing a few butterfly strokes in the water.

A wildlife official was called to check in on the bird, but it flew away before help arrived and appeared to be unharmed. According to io9, this isn't the first time great horned owls have been spotted swimming.

Apart from hunting prey, experts aren't sure why owls sometimes engage in this behaviour.
