Wednesday, June 24, 2015, 5:57 PM - An unidentified adult has been charged with speeding and with failing to properly secure a child in a motor vehicle after an officer found a child using a cardboard box instead of a car seat in the back of the car.

Sergeant Darrin Turnbull discovered the boy when he pulled the driver over speeding.

“As I talked to the driver, I noticed the cardboard box was moving,” Sgt. Turnbull told Global News.

“I asked what was in the box — and I was shocked when I saw a child’s hand pop out and wave.”

The driver told Turnbull the child had refused to sit in a car seat and wanted to play in the box.

“I know it is sometimes easier to just give in, but when it comes to safety of a child, the adults and not the kids must be in charge,” Sgt. Turnbull told Global.

The driver has been issued a $167 speeding ticket and must appear in court for failing to secure the pre-school boy.

To protect the privacy of the child, the adult involved cannot be named.
