Heat warnings in Manitoba

Saturday, July 5, 2014, 1:18 PM - Adding to an already-difficult and widespread flood emergency, the province of Manitoba is now also having to deal with heat warnings.
Environment Canada issued the warnings Saturday morning, saying that it could feel as hot as 40 in many places, including the city of Winnipeg.
"A southwesterly flow has drawn up very warm air across much of southern Manitoba and with the recent heavy rainfall there is abundent low-level humidity," the agency said in a statement. "The combination of air temperatures climbing to near 30 degrees this afternoon, and the high humidity, will produce humidex values near 40 this afternoon and early evening."

With those kind of humidity values, the following groups should take special care to stay cool and hydrated and avoid outdoor activity.
- older adults
- infants and young children
- people with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses
- people who work in the heat
- people who exercise in the heat
- people without access to air conditioning and
- homeless people.
It will only add to the province's current flood crisis. Manitoba declared a province-wide state of emergency this week, with plans to breach a dike on the Assiniboine River to the pressure off other flood prevention networks.
