Ice boulders form in Lake Michigan

Friday, January 9, 2015, 3:58 PM - Ice boulders weighing up to 50 pounds have washed ashore from Lake Michigan -- the result of chilly temperatures, heavy snow and strong winds across the eastern and Midwest U.S.
Ice boulders form when chunks of ice flow through waves created by strong winds.

Eventually, they take on a sphere-like shape.

Intense cold has gripped parts of the U.S. for the better part of the week, causing widespread delays and closures across the country. Snow limited visibility, making for dangerous driving conditions. Flurries extended as far south as Jacksonville, Florida.
Train rails were cracked by the cold, causing commuter delays in Washington, D.C. According to flightaware.com, 1937 flights were delayed and 515 cancelled by mid-afternoon Thursday.
Records have been broken in in Monpelier, Vermont, where the temperature dipped to -29C as well as Jackson, Kentucky, which saw a low of -18 degrees Celsius.
The deep freeze is expected to hang around until the weekend.
