Passengers on New York City subway stuck for hours without heat following ice build up

Monday, February 2, 2015, 4:50 PM - Subway commuters in New York City were stranded for hours without heat Monday morning after an electric third rail lost power and froze, local media reports.
Ice built up quickly on the rail once the trains stopped moving.
One train was stranded for hours without heat or power while four others were stuck between stations, prompting several rail suspensions, some of them lasting for more than six hours.
The incident occurred when an unidentified individual dropped an umbrella on the third rail, causing it to lose power at around 9 a.m.

The train that lost heat and power was towed to a station at 11:30 a.m.
According to a passenger, the commuters were stuck "shoulder-to-shoulder" for nearly three hours in the freezing cold.
