Wednesday, February 4, 2015, 5:53 PM - A new report by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) says the province's worst driver has collected 431 negative safety points, including several for at-fault collisions.

Still, officials say most of the motorists in Saskatchewan are safe drivers.

Of the 788,000 people with licenses in the province, 90 percent have no negative safety points at all.

The rating of the ten worst drivers in the province ranges from 176 to 431 negative points. Six of the ten drivers have been charged with drunk driving at least once.

The unidentified "worst" driver has been cited for numerous violations -- including at fault collisions (worth six negative safety points apiece), speeding, failing to stop at stop signs and running red lights -- among other things.

Once a driver has 20 or more negative safety points he or she must pay SGI a fine of $500 for each additional infraction. Higher fines are applicable if the driver has a blood-alcohol level above 0.08 at the time of the citation.

Drivers with points in the triple digits owe thousands in fines.

Sandy Crighton, manager of SGI's diver programs, told the Regina Leader-Post some motorists have racked up dozens of points by driving with a suspended licence, which "doesn't necessarily mean they're bad drivers."

"If I get caught driving while disqualified, it doesn't mean I'm being a bad driver; it means I'm ignoring the law," she added.

SGI says it works with suspended drivers to get them back on the roads legally.

The safe driver recognition program was launched in 2002.

All Saskatchewan drivers are placed on a safety rating scale. Motorists gain a point for every 365 days of driving without an offence.
