There's reason to celebrate the May long weekend in Ontario

Saturday, May 21, 2016, 9:01 PM - The May long weekend has arrived and the weather forecast is certainly something to celebrate.

Often referred to as the "unofficial kick off to summer," Ontarians can certainly expect an early taste of summer this weekend. That's after many people in the region woke up to a wintry May mix last weekend.

Despite cooler mornings accompanied by frost warnings earlier this week, temperatures continue to rebound across the province.

After a cloudy start to Saturday, conditions cleared and temperatures reached the 20s for many areas.

"The seasonal temperature for mid June in southern Ontario is around 25°C and some places will likely reach that this weekend," says Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham.

Sunday is expected to be another nice day for much of Ontario. A weak cold front tracking southward across the province through the afternoon may trigger some light rain and a pop up thundershower for parts of the region, including the Greater Toronto Area.

"The chance of showers for Sunday is isolated and should not warrant changing your outdoor plans," noted The Weather Network's meteorologist Nadine Hinds-Powell.

Taste of early summer next week

Even warmer temperatures are forecast for the middle of next week in southern Ontario, with daytime highs into the mid and upper 20s expected for areas away from the lake. There's also the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms as well, but no widespread rain of significance is expected before at least next Thursday.
