Romeo's owners were sleeping on the second floor of their home in the small village of San Lorenzo a Flaviano when the quake struck in the early hours of August 24. While they were able to safely exit, Romeo who was sleeping on the first floor, was sadly trapped inside. After frantically searching for their beloved pet for several hours, they eventually evacuated the village in fear of their safety.

At the time of the temblor, some beams from the house had fallen and were holding the weight of everything above them, leaving a spot where Romeo was able to survive.

The quake has left almost 300 people dead, with hundreds of injuries and thousands without homes.

Several canines have been praised for their rescue efforts. A black labrador named Leo was greeted by Italian Premier Matteo Renzi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel after the dog helped locate an eight-year-old girl under the rubble in Pescara del Toronto.

Meanwhile, in Amatrice, a German shepherd named Sarotti assisted rescuers in finding a 10-year-old girl.
