WATCH: Unbelievable waterspout in Italy

Tuesday, January 5, 2016, 10:22 AM - The massive spectacle in the video above might be a flashy way for Italy's weather to ring in the New Year.

The towering, curved waterspout was spotted on January 4 off the coast of the town of Castellabate in Campania, in the south of Italy. It went viral after being filmed and posted to Facebook.

Waterspouts can form due to tornadic activity, but most are typically not destructive, though they are almost always attached to the bottom of clouds.

In Canada, they can form on the Great Lakes when cooler air blows over unfrozen lake water, and the conditions are right for wind sheer.

In this case, it doesn't seem to have caused any damage, but Italy's meteorological service says it was part of a storm pattern that brought violent storms to the south of Italy.
