Helium balloons are now illegal in Nantucket, Massachusetts

Thursday, April 9, 2015, 5:12 PM - Helium balloons have officially been banned in Nantucket, Massachusetts, according to a report from the Boston Globe.
Residents voted earlier this week to do away with balloons inflated with 'lighter-than-air' substances, like helium.
More than 630 people attended Wednesday's town hall meeting, which discussed a number of topics and lasted for more than four hours.
Supporters say the balloons are dangerous because they can land in waterways, posing a threat to wildlife.

Most balloons aren't biodegradable, meaning they'll stay in the ecosystem for a long time.
Meanwhile, some critics argue the prohibition is unnecessary.
The ban needs to be approved by the state attorney general's office before it's made official, but officials are confident it will come to pass.
