Outrage after oil dumped on Nova Scotia community garden

Wednesday, August 3, 2016, 4:31 PM - Residents are said to be outraged after furnace or motor oil was dumped over portions of a community garden in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia last week.
“I was so disgusted, very mad,” Patricia Hurley, one of the co-ordinators at the Glace Bay Food Bank Society, told the Cape Breton Post.
“We are a non-profit organization and the garden is there to help feed people in the community."

According to Hurley, food bank organizers found oil on lettuce, flowers that had been donated to beautify the garden, beets, peppers, cucumbers and cabbage.
“You cannot only smell it but you can see it on the plants, on the leaves. We can’t use these plants now. I’m so mad, this is absolutely ridiculous, taking food out of the mouths of people who need it," Hurley said.
According to Hurely, the food bank distributes about 300 bottles of canned products made from the garden, along with salad dressings, to families in need.
The organization is now in the process of calculating their losses, which they believe are "significant."
Police have launched an investigation and are asking anyone with information to contact them at at 902-563-5151.
