Woman dips egg beater in lava, gets arrested

Thursday, November 6, 2014, 2:36 PM - Hawaii resident Ruth Crawford was arrested Thursday after she dunked an egg beater in a 2,000 degree lava flow to see what would happen.

Crawford, 59, and a companion drove to the lava flow in Hawaii's Puna region and went beyond police-enforced barriers to drop golf clubs, kitchen utensils and coins into the lava.

In total, they dipped 15 items, just for fun.

After speaking to media about the deed, she and her friend Stephan Paul Koch were arrested for trespassing and released on $250 bail.

“[I went] just because it’s lava and I’ve been here 23 years,” Crawford told reporters. “I was kind of excited and scared and just wanted to do it.”

While lava flowing from Kilauea volcano has slowed since it began moving toward residential areas in June, it remains a threat to people on Hawaii's Big Island.

On Sunday U.S. President Barack Obama signed a disaster declaration for the lava flow, allowing for federal aid that will support local and state recovery efforts.
